If you're mostly in urban areas, larger cities, the 4G is awesome. I was in Stockholm, Sweden for the world première of Telia and Ericsson's showcase of the new 4G back in 2009. Amazing speed and voice clarity. But 4G also requires many base stations, so effectively, coverage will for the most part only be in areas which are well populated.
If I were to buy something new today, I would definitley go with a 4G device, after all, that's what's coming. And as long as you mostly go or stay at places within the coverage, you'll be good!
