It's happening man. My buddy was working for Verizon up until the end of Nov last year, you're right it's been in the works for a long time, but those issues with Apple & Verizon have long since been worked out.
And yes, the major announcements will come. Verizon hasn't done it yet because they didn't want people to hold off from buying their current top sellers, especially during the holiday season. Their Droid phones do very well; making an official announcement months ago that they're in the midst of building a massive 4G infrastructure along with an iPhone capable of using it would be a terrible business decision.
