depends how you look at it , safe means they can sell it almost anywhere, unlike most porn. People feel comfortable with products they know , everyone knows playboy, they know what to expect, they know they won't be shocked. They can tie safe things into anything.

heres a rather small example of what playboy could sell and make a mint

water.. playboy branded water. bottled water is a huge biz, tons of ops for cross promotion , plus it's free advertising

cams.. what cam girl wouldnt rather say they work for playboy being a playboy girl instead of " i work for some cam sex site"
