If they were able to come back and were upfront and honest about it I bet they could work out something which would allow them to continue. Something like promising to make payments over the course of a year on the back balance beginning three months after restarting to give them a chance to raise some funds first. It seems to me that most people would be happy just to see them back and would work with them.
