I don't know, and to each their own, but I absolutely hated Hanoi. Here's one of many reasons why:
I'm the type of guy who likes to walk the streets, especially when I hit a new country, but that was a little unpleasant in Hanoi. People selling shit on the street can be a little aggressive too, or at least moreso than in Thailand. People would follow me for 6 blocks before giving up. Had a nice hotel booked in the old quarter for 4 nights, but only lasted 2, before I just went to the airport and hopped on the first flight to Thailand.
Siam Reap's a cool little city though, and the temples are awesome. I found Cambodians to be extraordinarily nice, and a very genuine nice too. Not a "i'll be nice, so I can hopefully get a big tip" nice, but genuinely great people. I guess that's what a couple decades of war with some genocide thrown in does to your country. You can tell, they just want peace now, and don't want any fighting.
