It's just a sign of the times. The entry barrier to this industry is very low - anyone can join, and the money was easy. Now that you have to work for it people went back to work at Wendy's, other fast food jobs, and Wal Mart.
Same is true for many sponsors. There was the dream of getting rich overnight. The massive returns and the growth phase. Now that the industry is on the decline and you have to actually run a business properly forming real partnerships, branding, and building trust many simply don't have the skills. It's a lot harder to survive when Visa no longer allows you to bang surfers for $200 worth of hidden pre-checked cross sales and you're unable to continue with these sorts of scams. And of course if your name is mud among the few savvy veteran affiliates left because you've been screwing people for years and they know it (even if they haven't had the guts to call you out on the boards), what can you really do? It's no wonder so many cut and run.
