The armed forces serve the interests of the government (and indirectly, the people), but are hardly out fighting day and night to free oppressed people or defend the US from direct attack.

Your point is well taken...
Look wars are mostly fought for political / geo political issues.... In cases of wars such as WWII - where we are clearly justifed in our defense of our nation and our allies overseas there is no question - if we should of gone.
we can always blame our leaders, pols, etc but no one, even know they have the right to speak up and protest - should ever degrade the service of our military members as they are of course very low on the chain, so to speak... They follow orders from Pols and do thier job.
