I think the point (if he can be said to have one) is that EVERYTHING the US military does or that anyone serving in the military does is touted as being done in the defense of freedom and democracy, even when its clearly not true.

The armed forces serve the interests of the government (and indirectly, the people), but are hardly out fighting day and night to free oppressed people or defend the US from direct attack.
