i have played hockey and football. hockey hurts a lot more, but the problem is its alot harder to hit someone hard in hockey because they can move and keep their head up. plus body checking isn't taught like it should be in minor hockey.
its all about the speed of the game, it makes the hits a lot harder. a good open ice hit makes your insides move. in football you just get hit with a shoulder.
