I know a guy who was attacked by several Thai guys who tried to extort money from him. They attacked him first, he ran to a fruit cart and grabbed a big knife. The Thais charged him with their own weapons and he fucked them up BAD, cut the fuck out of them. Cops came, it was all his fault. He paid out something crazy like 50k USD for all the physical damages to the guys (he almost killed them). If he didn't pay, he was going to prison.
