There are specialty bowls you can buy that are designed to help them slow down their eating, especially with kibble because they can get bloated fast when throwing it down their throats that quickly, but my dog expert go to says that she just adds water to their bowls and it does the same thing. Slows down there gobbling and helps them avoid the bloating.
As for what people feed their dogs I was amazed that most people feed their dogs FAR too much food. My friend is a breeder and a trainer and has two golden labs of her own and they only eat 2 cups of kibble a day, once in the morning, once in the evening and thats it. These dogs are HUGE too (meaning healthy and muscly). Cheaper dog foods you have to feed them more because they are not getting enough out of them. Go with the good stuff and you will not have to use as much and you will save money over all even because of that.
My friend alternates between Acana Grain Free and Orijen, all canadian made so not sure if they have the equivalent where you are at, but heres the website anyway.
