When my ICQ kept asking me if I wanted to download an upgrade, I'd say no thanks. One day, it began ignoring my "no" and downloaded it anyway. Knowing that it would do the upgrade the next time I started ICQ against my wishes, I went to the ICQ program folder and deleted the downloaded upgrade package. This worked so I did it each day before closing ICQ. After maybe 10 times it stopped downloading it.

I also have a tweaker that lets you remove all the ads, resize the window and make the contact list the only thing you see if you keep the main program open. None of the bullshit. It looks like the old (old old) ICQ.

There's usually an icq ad remover out there within a day or so of a new upgrade because it's such a common complaint.

Trillian works good too. The only problem I ever had with it was occasionally orphaning people at random, that was a few versions ago though.
