The freesite model is still alive, but you need to be within a certain group of linklist owners to be able to profit. You can generate serious traffic from freesites, but it is a long road of building. Once you build around 30 freesites you can use the same templates and just replace the content, title, description, and keywords. This will drive your build time down a lot. I really wouldnt start building freesites unless you plan on doing around 25+ sites a month for 6 months. If you need some more info, you can icq me and I will point you in the right direction.
