The Jews is the most accurate name for members of the Jewish people. You don't say "Christian people" or "Japanese people" for Christians or Japanese.
People jump at the word Jews because Jews represent something powerful that the world does not like - the call to a higher moral law.
There is no analogy between "Jews" and "crackers." Crackers is a derogatory term, a slur, for white people. Jew is not a slur for a Jewish person. It is the most accurate term.
