Well, I recall seeing a documentary on the run up to the US involvment in WW2 that showed pretty clearly in documented radio calls that we knew the Japanese fleet had launched long range bombers and escorts.
The US was not going to get into it until we were attacked. And we were attacked and we then got involved.
Now I dont think the British painted up some planes to look like Japanese planes, but they were utterly desperate for the US to do more than send them hardware across the atlantic. So what if someone tried saying that the british painted red dots and it was actually them who bombed us? They'd say stfu. But if you show them the internal documents from the radio man in pearl harbour asking washington for direction re: incoming bombers, people will believe it.
Few people will even pay attention to the story if the preceeding 1000 stories are all about crazy impossible theories.
