So it has little to do with telling anyone anything. Supposedly they can't ask you if you are gay, but if they find out you are, then you are done.

That is not quiet the way it works...a gay person could actually acknowledge to being a gay and the military will usually overlook the admission if the person does not engage in any type of homosexual act or overtly act in a gay manner. Holding hands with a male at the movies would constitute an overt gay act...and could very well get the person tossed out.
