for all of my tats i have always started with an idea and worked from there. and always by the time i went to talk to the different tattooists in the area i had drawings and designs to show them so that i could give them a very good idea of what i wanted.
there are some very good tattooists around my area...but i dont think i could ever trust someone no matter how skilled they are in bringing my tattoo to life with just a few thoughts on what i want.
i guess what bothers me here is the idea of someone seeing a picture and thinking it would be cool to have it on their body. it reminds me of someone picking out a tat from one of the pictures in a tattooists portfolio.

There you've hit the nail on the head. There are a lot of good tattooists around but that doesn't mean I'd allow them to touch me with ink. They need to be beyond good and you need a relationship with them that allows this trust. Amp summed it up as far as designs go. As far as tattooists go though it's just a matter of doing your homework and spending time chatting/getting to know the guy first.
