It's not about gays wanting to hold hands, kiss, fuck and claim they are gay at work. But just like the straight people, they want to be able to go home to the person they love, maybe enjoy public events outside of the military (not allowed either) or maybe if one dies/really sick they can actually get permission to see them - unlike now.
That's not really hard to fathom either.
