There are two whois databases one needs to check - the .COM registry whois and then the registrar whois, which will have the actual expiration date.
The date you're seeing is the registry expiration date, which is automatically added by the registry - the domain is currently in auto-renew grace period.
Who.is must be crappy - any decent 3rd party whois service will display all whois info, including, for .com and .net, both registry
and registrar data.
I've seen many people lose domains because they didn't check both whois databases - or at least use a service that typically does so, such as DomainTools.
