Because its all fake and scripted like pretty well all of the other programs on television? I don't understand why you're lumping it in with sports programming, because - even though professional wrestlers ARE athletes - its not sport. Its entertainment.

My uncle was Pat Flannigan. There was nothing that I enjoyed more than listening to Uncle Pat's stories of how he and Whipper Billy Watson (no relation, but Whipper Bill got his stage name by using my uncle's real last name) fight the dastardly Kalmikoffs, and of how he and Mr. Bill became tag team champions by kicking some Lord Athol Layton ass.

Later on (in the '70s), I watched wrestling on television just to see Uncle Pat referee. He was a great man, full of joviality, generosity and great humour. He died over twenty years ago, and I haven't had any interest in wrestling since.

True story: Uncle Pat was friends with Roy Rogers. When I went through my "cowboy" phase, Uncle Pat showed up and gave me an autographed life-sized cardboard likeness of Roy Rogers and Trigger as a birthday present. Seriously, the fucking thing had to be six feet tall and eight feet long.

My mom snapped, and I didn't get to keep it. That made me a sad baby panda.
