I also have a psych degree, and working on a masters in psych. The phenomenon you are referring to is known as a schema. It is the method that our minds use to integrate and reconstruct a framework of knowledge based on assumptions about people, objects and events. The likelihood that thousands of people would all have the exact same schema is virtually impossible. Please show me one eye witness that says they saw something other than a plane.
