Look at Zimbabwe .. gold is fast becoming the currency again because the paper money has failed. You either pay in US dollars, or gold .. the local currency isn't worth the paper its printed on.

I'm saying if things get the point where paper money becomes worthless there wont be many (if any) companies manufactoring products, services, etc because 99.9% of people don't have any real amount of gold to begin with.
