I'd expect them to end up profitable in the long run...
What this movie does reinforce is the fact that a movie like Avatar making a gazillion dollars really is an amazing accomplishment. Generating that kind of push for anything, let alone 3 hours of sitting in a dark room full of strangers is a hell of a task.
