I can't believe how many big sites and sponsor programs don't have a favicon. They are a pain in the ass to make but I love pixel art and that's basically all they are.
IMHO, they are an important part of your brand. They sit next to the url in the address bar, and next to your link if users bookmark your site. If you don't have one, it's just an ugly white square.
