dogs would mess up carpet easier than hardwood. if your floors are getting scratched from a dog you should get some more dense wood with a high jank rating (http://tinytimbers.com/janka.htm). if your floors are scratched you can screen them with a buffer and put down a new coat of polyurethane very cheap.
