I never got the whole paper route thing because where I grew up it was always 35 year old people delivering papers in their cars at 4:30 AM. There was no such thing as a paper boy on a bike ... I always figured that was a Hollywood myth.
Come to think of it, everybody cut their own grass, too.
There were no real job opportunities until you turned 14, got your work permit and became a bus boy. No other type of job usually opened up to you until you were 16 when the work permit became less restrictive.
