In this business, reputation is everything, and you are who you associate with. Son Of Rage will forever be known as a rapist because the court found him guilty and he served time - and therefore the Family will be associated as having a rapist in its midst.
Tough love, has to be done. In order to preserve the respect of the Family and its members, Son of Rage has to go.
The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few - or the one.
