He's working out doors with fill in camera flash and maybe reflectors. This is a nightmare to get right and will screw most professionals with 20 years experience a crew and a lot of expensive equipment.
The sun is banging out enough light to give an FStop of F11-13 at a 125 shutter speed. A camera falsh is best at F4.5 to F8 at 60. Most pro photographers will have a generator and use studio lights, to give the power/light required.
Also he is moving around to lots of different locations and getting varying light.
Tom photography wise, good pics in difficult circumstances.
