This is just my personal experience with LW, more so with Stan.
I had a deal with likewhoa in regards to letting them use my content feeds in exchange for bandwidth.
So we come up with how much b/w i would get free, and how much bandwidth usage they would be allowed to use in exchange for the feeds. They were to cover their own b/w usage cost and my free bandwidth wasnt to be put towards their usage.
In the first few months i had informed Stan on numerous times that he has left members areas wide open and that the server was pulling close to 30MBit/sec or so. After days of hassling him about the members area being open to anyone i decided to say fuck it, after all, i'm not their babysitter, if they want their members area open then fine.
3 Months go by after that first month where they used the 30Mbit/sec.. next thing i know i have like two invoices for the previous 3 months i think it was, for close to like 3000 if not more (im too lazy to dig up the receipts/bills/paypal payments).
They actually had the balls to try and charge me for their bandwidth usage, i just about told them where to go.. but i didnt have much of a choice right now, all my content was on that machinie and it was still cheaper than using my canadian connections. (but not cheaper than a us link, you'll read later on).
We ended up working out some complete bullshit price where i still payed too much.. why did i pay too much you might ask? Well i dont know what would have happened, or if the server would have been online after i stood firmly about how their excessive usage should ofset my bill completely. I had to put my customers first and didnt want downtime while i had to propergate the content to a new location, or my content falling into someone elses hands.
I started shopping for new connections and what i had come to find was co mpletely shocking...
I had made this deal with likewhoa to save some money initially while starting up but this "deal", if you can call it that, was actually COSTING ME MORE MONEY than it would have had i gone out and commited to usage somewhere else.
Think of that, a deal made to save you money costs you more money than it would have costed you to go out and buy what you got from the deal.
Had they invoiced me month by month i wouldnt have been forced to pay them anything but they kind of had me by the balls.
Anyways, that is just my experience with likewhoa and dealing with Stan.
As for the downtime, i kept my mouth shout because i thought that it was actually free bandwidth i was getting and wasnt going to compain.. had i known i was actually paying for the shit i would have been a hell of a lot more vocal.
