The Indonesian culture still has a strong belief in the spirit world and it is not uncommon for people to believe that a spirit entered an animal. The forces of good and evil battle everyday and people go to the "majic man" or "prayer man" to remove evil curses routinely. The majority of these people claim to see ghosts and believe to their core. So if the boy says the cow was a beautiful woman that was seducing him, I can assure you the village chief believed him.
