The scenes from '05 and '06 were edited and authored using older technology because HD wasn't yet a standard then, so there was definitely loss during each transfer from tape to hard drive and then back to tape. HD is HD. It is not 2005HD or 2006HD or new 2009 HD.
If you encode it as 640*480 with low bitrate and then back to 1920*1080, that is not HD.
