This has been an ongoing debate for a very long time, that the rich part of Belgium doesn't really want to pay for the poor part and it's also tied to the Flemish and French speaking side, one of them is poor and one of them is rich.
It's right on the border between the Germanic Europe and the latin Europe languages. Most of the political life circles around the representation of different people and their language herritage. A very complicated matter and even though voices are heard from time to time to split the country, it would then be two very small countries and it would probably just loose in importance on the Euro scene. For example they could loose the EU headoffice in Brussels which would be an enourmus loss of prestige.
