150 years ago in America most blacks were slaves and women were second class citizens that couldn't vote.
About fifty years ago blacks in the South couldn't go to public school with the white kids, couldn't play in professional sports, women were second class citizens that stayed at home and cleaned the house and Joe McCarthy was asking people if they have or ever were.
A little over fifty years ago Japanese citizens in the US and Canada were dragged from their homes and locked away in concentration camps until after the war is over.
