Those ideas were done more to make it appear that they are doing something than anything else. The relief wells were started immediately and they will most likely fix the problem, but not before a huge amount of damage is done. Between the clean up costs and all the lawsuits this could destroy BP which would not really upset me all that much... And, with or without the government's boot heel or more sometimes-enforced regulations, every company in the world drilling oil will be a whole hell of a lot more careful.
