Well...there is...or at the least was...at least two very small towns in California...one of which use a barter system as well as U.S. currency and another town that prints its own money which is used as barter...as well as U.S. currency. Both towns do so because of lack of jobs in the community. The people manage but for the most part are very poor. I don't view it as being practical outside of a very small community that is barely managing survival.
