Indeed the best way is just to walk into your local shelter with no breed pre requirements. Go around and look em over, talk to them, look at the specs, age ect and just see what happens. Maybe you want a quieter cat, male vs female, poss one might be declawed, which altho not recommended may suit you.
Things work out if you go in looking for a friend.
I've befriended (cats own you, you don't own them) about 5 diff breeds. They all have diff skills as it were.
If you don't want to rescue or chase maimed mice, birds ect around your house at random times for 10 years then don't get a cat. Cats live for one thing: To hunt, esp at night.
My current cat has caught over 50 mice/year for 10 years.. (not counting birds) figuring there is at least one more rodent not brung inside, that is 1000 mice, vermin, rodents / lifetime (which really benefits society) and 500 YOU will have to deal with.

Some will escape the cat and live in the house a few days.
The one other thing I will say is if you adopt one.. it is for life.
I can think of lots more but heres a good link of breeds with pics if you didnt see it:

I never met a cat I didn't like.. but have made the mistake of feeding a few strays too.. through many winters of negative temps.
Good luck and congratz.
