Acually the old german word "gift" means the same as the english word "gift", but it could be used for a "positive gift" (=present) or a "negative gift" (=poison). In today's german it's only used as the word for poison and in some combined words that remain from the past (like "mitgift" = marriage portion). Today's german word for a present would be "Geschenk"
