They aren't that poor. Most of them own their homes and have jobs. Shit, most of them blame their laziness and dirty-ass houses on the fact that they're too busy working or doing other activities. There may be people that live in dirty poverty, but most of the people on this show just live in shitholes because they're lazy.
So no, it's not sad. They aren't being exploited. They're getting a fucking handout because they're too lazy to clean up their own shit (literally in a lot of cases) and it makes for good television.
