You see, today's liberals want to be ruled by an enligthened despot, the "best and the brightest," not "Joe Six-Pack." Kings, so to speak, descended from other kings. Or even better, a Lightworker. They distrust individual rights and disdain the "normal, average American."
Contast this with Classical Liberalism as espoused by John Locke, Adam Smith, and Thomas Jefferson. They believed strongly in limited government and the free market. While Modern Liberalism believes that people only have rights as delineated by the government, Classical Liberalism held that people have natural rights from the Divine Creator, apart from government. Government derived its power solely from the people, and the people could dissolve the government at will. The only legitimate purpose of government was to protect these individual rights.
Jefferson believed the power of the government should lay with the comman man, the so-called "yeoman farmer." He distrusted elites and felt legislators would be influenced by the wealthy.
