As for the content, and CMS to use. That will depend on a lot of factors. I personally would recommend a pay site tube. People have responded well to them and they are awesome if you have a lot of content.
If you are running a smaller pay site with minimal content, then SiteDepth and following the 1999 pay site design would be an alternative. Keeping the content behind the curtain as it were until you have more of it. This also requires more designer costs, since you have to use more presale/tools/tours/etc. to sell the wizard as it were.
When you have a bunch of content, and it's in a tube pay site CMS. The content and volume sells it's self. You do not need to waste money on tours, and all that shit. You just point them to your site, and give them 20-60 seconds preview (I prefer 30) and they buy or not.
Don't forget adding in a clip store option. A lot of people DO buy single clips and prefer it over memberships now a days. I have people who literally buy $100+ in clips per month instead of the $29 membership.
People who do not know how to work a clip store laugh at the business model. But it really is a solid source of additional revenue and quality buying traffic. Not everyone wants a membership and recurring billing.
Also keep in mind that SOME CMS's have annual and/or support fees. SiteDepth moved in that direction. Where MechBunny for example doesn't. You get lifetime support.
As for content, there are a TON of deals on the market. So you can get literally THOUSANDS of scenes and start a solid pay site for $3000.00. Add in some more variety, and maybe another $2000.00 and you have a solid kick ass site and content to last you years.
Good luck Simon.

Thanks man, some very good points there
How does mechbunny work as far as photos go? does it build galleries for members etc.? or is the photo area more for members to post their stuff?
I never gave it a though about using a tube script for the cms. But that could be a very good idea!
I'm guessing it's easy to integrate ccbill into the script aswell?
