It's called the dumbing down of American society for 50+ years now. We're basically bitches now. It's ok to make fun of someone's religion or call someone a nutjob because they're either religious or right wing. But when you start making fun of secular humanism, liberalism, any other isms that are a joke, or homosexuality, you're a racist, a bigot, etc.. The double standards are amazing.
