Early in my career I worked for a company called Mindcomet ( http://www.mindcomet.com). They do a lot of high profile rich media stuff...
We actually had one client, Yupo, who used to be VERY much into high end design. They won marketing awards every year... Anyway they would drop six figures on JUST the design. They wanted 3 - 5 unique designs and then they would start picking and choosing / refining from there. They would wrap several designers up for months...

Yep.. One of my closest friends is a lead developer at a firm in LA.. does work for lots of Hollywood types, then half of the Fortune 500 list.. Also the best developer I know.. anyway, a friend here in adult asked for the best dev guy I know.. referred 'em to him.. came back and they were stunned at what his quote was.. and he told me he offered 'em 50% off his normal rates
He thought he was giving them a helluva deal.. They thought he was crazy
If he does freelance, he charges about $500+ per hour usually. Half of the money the company makes is places like Pepsi doing big promos, buying up a random domain, putting maybe 3 pages on it, then all he does is code the designers stuff into valid xHTML/CSS.. but Pepsi will spend 500k+ on those 3 pages. Yes, I realize that's not big time development.. never said that's all he does
