Rapidshare Aims To Convert Pirates Into Customers
Rapidshare Terminates Accounts of Copyright Infringers
Some highlights
Quote:
...RapidShare’s supervisory board has decided to not just rely on the filehosting business but to extend our company’s efforts to officially distribute licensed content...
...For quite a few weeks and months we have seen changes in the filehosting business. Several new players are trying heavily and with shady or unfair business practices to get into the market... RapidShare has decided not to participate in this battle and not to fight for the favor of criminals. Instead we would rather like to agitate against these activities and – if possible – to institute proceedings against those competitors of ours, who are intentionally supporting criminal activities...
...We are more aggressively than before terminating accounts of users who have been caught uploading copyright protected content...
...RapidShare is seeking the partnership of the content industry to generate new models that make piracy obsolete... We believe that if users can instantly find what they are looking for at a fair price, piracy will become a problem of the past.

They seem to smell it that the "cyberlocker" thing is not going to last long and want to jump ships before their filehosting business went down in smokes.
It is also interesting want kind of "procedures" they're going to institute against their "aggressive competitors" - it is indeed the fact that many new "cyberlocker" sites popped up recently, which makes it harder for us to combat piracy because of many new destinations to send our DMCAs to (and not all of them remove files as easily as rapidshare does). I wouldnt mind some help with them, even if it comes from rapidshare.
And it is also interesting to what extent they're going to implement their locking accounts of illegal uploaders policy - that would really help us if they'd block account and remove all files after an uploader was caught several times uploading illegally. That'd mean that all his links posted at all boards will be dead and we no longer need to search and report them all.
