A good start? Sorry couldn't resist.
Anyway, there is nothing wrong with religion per se. I don't believe in nor like organized religion for many, many reasons. BUT... it is not necessarily the religion that corrupts the believer, rather the believer that corrupts the religion. Just as all things are corruptible, so too religion.
This, in the end, is why religion fails. The bible, written by primitive and fallible humans, interpreted 1,000's of different ways by fallible humans, divided and sub divided into newer religions by fallible humans, and quite expectantly corrupted by fallible humans equals a failed system.
But to blame religion for the actions of these people is about as dumb as saying guns kill people when in actuality it was the unstable human using the gun that kills people. Whatever the tool is, that is all it is, a tool, an excuse for human behavior. How it gets used is entirely in the hands of, once again, fallible humans.
