No, the expression comes from a passage in a Chuck Palaniuk novel where he is talking about the sorts of girls who make a mess of their lives, are perhaps exciting, but are also losers who will call you in the middle of the night with their weird problems, or something to that effect. I don't have the page in front of me this minute, but that is the gist of it.
I have not noticed my purple hair closing a lot of doors in 2010. It doesn't open as many as it used to either, because it is no longer particularly unusual, so the cultural signifiers have changed and become less significant. Welcome to this year.
