Aaron is right...they are scams.
What you can do is write the Credit Companies directly disputing items (even if they are your fault)... I've done it several times and had things removed.
Also, on your credit report you will see the names of Collection Companies and their contact info. These companies fold left and right so if the number is no longer in service, you simply write the credit reporting company and explain to them that "you just got your report and saw "whatever" on it and tried to contact the collection agency to see what it was all about, but since they are no longer operating you have no idea if you are liable for this money and have no way of finding out and they will remove it from your report.
