I gotta take the side of making an effort to find the owner, even if it is as little an effort as putting a note up as you said, "Found item, call 555-5555 to describe."

Someone could lose some serious shit if they lost a laptop.. 100s of pages if they were an author, 100s of gallery or website designs if they were an artist, weeks or months of research & design if they were in science or engineering, or maybe even their job if the information on the drive was sensative.

On the other hand, if the owner doesn't hand over a hefty reward I'd be pretty pissed. Granted I'd "know I did the right thing," but I could have saved that dude's ass, the least he could do is drop me a c-note and a bottle of Tanqueray, preferably No. 10. ;)

Maybe he'll invite you over for an exotic indian dinner and to take nudie pics of his wife? haha..
