If the dollar tanks tomorrow and we have hyperinflation, mediocre movies will surpass Avatar in number of dollars...
You can't compare figures when the unit of measure isn't constant.

Why would I need to adjust since I am not comparing???
Only if somebody asked you to compare the money you made with somebody else would you need to adjust for inflation. And the guy who made 1 million dollars in the fifties was way richer than the one who made the equivalent amount in the nineties.
