They teach women to obey no matter what the circumstance. In fact, their whole church is built around never questioning authority (like most...which is why the CIA loves to recruit a good Mormon boy).

Throughout the church's short existence (it's only 150 years old or so), the church's Quorum have had "divine revelations" whenever the church was about to lose their tax-exempt status as a church (due to things like blood-letting, plural marriages, denying blacks admittance to the church).
Secret names, secret handshakes, Gold plates only Joseph Smith could read (or see), your own planet to rule in the afterlife, and magic underpants are just some of the fun called LDS!

Maybe I didn't see it so much because I was never an adult in the church nor did I live in an area with many mormoms around. As soon as I was old enough (my mother decided I could make my own choice at 16) I left and never went back.
I do agree that when abuse does happen, they don't like it going public, I assume due to PR reasons. There was a missionary that molested some kids in my branch and he got away with it despite so many people knowing...eventually someone put him away though because I read he recently was killed in a Utah prison. However I don't really think abuse happens any more in LDS families than any other. The church has a very racist history and a strange past, much of which I was totally unaware until I did my own research. I think many mormons have no idea about it.
