If you are serious about making money in the adult business, why on earth would you spend your time working on back-end technical stuff? Go and work for a technical company if you want to play with software - if you're here to earn money then concentrate on WHAT EARNS MONEY.
Outsource / pay other people to do the technical stuff and spend your time generating traffic for your site, good quality content for your site, etc . . i.e. work on the stuff that MAKES MONEY - programming a free CSM system won't make you any money. Sure you may save a few thousand dollars but you are missing the big picture - pay the money for MAS or Carma and then spend the huge amount of time you will save on building your adult business.

or..... you hire someone to build you a custom robust CMS for less money?
I don't see where the OP posted he wants to program, he asked for CMSs. He has the option to hire someone to have a custom one built, buy one standardized script or built one by himself.
On top of that, what you're saying can be applied in an exact opposite way. See, I could buy content, could buy traffic and concentrate in making my members' experience better so they signup and after that rebill and rebill and rebill. That's why a custom system is always better and why the biggest adult companies use custom systems: you can add features on the fly by just paying someone (if you don't have the tech abilities). Bling. And don't tell me MOFOS, BANGBROS, NASTY DOLLARS, ARS, TWISTY'S, etc aren't being serious about money. I know there are other big companies using standard scripts as well. But most of them (if not all) are using highly customized versions with absolutely prohibitive prices for start-up sites/programs.
Furthermore, I think current adult scripts are really good for members areas, but most of them are extremely outdated in terms of front-end capabilities, some of them are several years behind... but if you can't make your surfers pay for to enter your members areas... who cares how good your CMS is managing it? Most people won't see it anyway!
That's why we always recommend a custom CMS system. Or even better, a good CMS for members area and a custom TMS (Tour Management System) for public areas. Differences are day and night. And IMHO, making money is more serious than having some CMS "just because". To us, a CMS/TMS is just the media to achieve a goal, we develop them as a marketing tool that helps our clients to get more sales.
Sadly, most people consider the CMS as the goal itself, as long as it's installed and working, everything is cool. At most, they'll hire a designer to skin their CMS. If you can't see how flawed is that logic, I don't know what to say
PS: at the time of writing this, we're skinning 2 different standard CMS scripts and they will rock, so we have nothing against standard scripts, as a matter of fact we earn more skinning that custom developing
